Floating Gardens
A custom multiple piece hanging installation
Brief.
The Centrum Chodov shopping centre (largest in Czech Republic) was in it's final year of being built. An important public space was in need of a fresh feature to act as a generous welcoming gesture for the visitors arriving from the main pedestrian route to/from the metro line Chodov.
Hurdles.
The space was visible from multiple points and the entire height of the space is perceived from many escalators. The installation will remain in the same location for the duration of 5+ years. There is limited sunlight and a slight draft of wind so the plants had to be weighted enough to not swing or topple over. We had to be mindful off the ceiling as it could not hold a lot of weight.

Result.
A collection of x17 XL hanging Kokedama. This consisted of x6 plant types which were hung at different heights to fill the space. Black mirror cladding was added to the surrounding walls which enhanced the visual effect. We used artificial plants due to the lack of sunlight and length of time they need to be on display. We designed and hand made each Kokedama in our Amsterdam studio, packaged and shipped them off to Prague where all 17 XL Kokedama were installed.
Project refection.
Our clients and us are thrilled with the outcome. There are often people taking photos of this display, they could fool anyone to think they are all real and not fake plants hanging there. Due to the success of these Kokedama we have stopped with our real Kokedama production and are focusing on making these products and our commissioned work. Best part.
Installing these at 3am, with translators, zipping up and down with the crane and seeing our art works hanging in this huge space (the pictures really don’t give it justice). Kim was 7 months pregnant and having the time of her life.
